Division and conference are two of the most useful ways to narrow down colleges, but they work a little differently depending on where you're filtering. This guide explains what each division level means, how football's FBS/FCS split is handled, and how conferences are tied to your sport.
Division levels
Colleges compete at one of these levels: NCAA D1, NCAA D2, NCAA D3, NAIA, or Junior College. Each level has its own rules around scholarships, eligibility, and roster size — that's general recruiting knowledge worth researching sport-by-sport, not something ProductiveRecruit enforces or scores for you. What the product does is let you filter and track colleges by whichever levels you're realistically targeting.
In College search, Division sits in the Athletics filter group alongside Sport and Conference, and you can select multiple levels at once, useful if you're casting a wide net across D2 and D3 programs, for example.
Football's FBS/FCS split
Football is a special case. NCAA D1 football is actually split into two subdivisions, FBS and FCS, and ProductiveRecruit stores them as their own division values rather than lumping them under a generic "D1."
Here's how that shows up depending on where you are:
- College search: if you're a football athlete and select "NCAA D1," your results automatically include FBS and FCS schools too, so you don't need to select them separately.
- College preferences: the division picker instead lists FBS and FCS as their own explicit options (shown as "D1 — FBS" and "D1 — FCS"), and drops the generic "NCAA D1" option entirely for football. Non-football sports never see FBS/FCS and just get the standard five levels.
Conferences are tied to your sport
Conferences aren't a flat list. They're scoped to whichever sport you're searching. A conference name only applies to schools that field a team for that specific sport, so the Conference filter won't show any options until a sport is selected (either automatically, from your profile, or manually if you have more than one sport). This keeps the list relevant instead of showing you conferences that have nothing to do with what you play.
Conference and division are both just data fields on each program: think of them as attributes you can filter and sort by, not something ProductiveRecruit calculates or ranks for you.
